Central Kentucky is a genuinely great place to live, and a PCS to Fort Knox tends to surprise people in the best way. The cost of living is manageable, the communities surrounding post are welcoming, and there's more to do here than most folks expect. Understanding the Fort Knox Area

Fort Knox sits in Hardin County, about 35 miles south of Louisville on US-31W. The installation is home to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command (HRC), U.S. Army Cadet Command, U.S. Army Recruiting Command, and the 1st Theater Sustainment Command, among other units. After BRAC realignment, the post actually grew in personnel — it's a busy, active installation with a strong sense of community.

Gold Vault Gate (Main Gate): Located off US-31W near Radcliff. This is the most-used gate and connects directly to the main post areas. Expect heavier traffic during PT hours and the morning rush.
Brandenburg Gate: On the west side of post, accessed from Highway 313. This is a great option if you live in Vine Grove or western Hardin County — lighter traffic and a quicker route to many work areas.
Chaffee Gate: Located on the north side near Muldraugh. Less commonly used for daily commuting but convenient if you live north of post.

All gates require a valid DoD ID card and vehicle registration. Gate hours can change, so check the Fort Knox garrison website before you plan your first drive in.

Schools for Military Kids

Education is typically a top concern for PCSing families. Fort Knox has on-post schools operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) including Fort Knox Elementary, Middle, and High School. These schools specifically serve military children and understand the challenges of frequent moves, deployments, and the military lifestyle.

Off-post, you'll find Hardin County Schools and Elizabethtown Independent Schools. North Hardin High School (Radcliff), John Hardin High School (south Hardin County), and Elizabethtown High School are the main public high schools in the area. Cost of Living & BAH

Your BAH is calculated based on the Fort Knox zip code, and 2025 rates are competitive enough that many service members purchase a home rather than rent. With a VA loan requiring $0 down and no PMI, you can often secure a 3-4 bedroom home in Radcliff, Vine Grove, or Elizabethtown with monthly payments that stay well within your housing allowance.

What to Do Before You Arrive

Contact your sponsor. Your gaining unit should assign you one. If they haven't, reach out to your first sergeant or commander's office.
Schedule a house-hunting trip. If possible, use your permissive TDY to visit the area before your report date. This gives you time to tour neighborhoods, meet with a military relocation agent, and get a feel for the community.
Set up temporary housing. If you arrive before your permanent housing is ready, there are several extended-stay options in Radcliff and Elizabethtown. On-post temporary lodging (IHG Army Hotels) is available but books up quickly during PCS season.

Closer to home, you'll find Elizabethtown's Freeman Lake Park, Swope's Cars of Yesteryear Museum, and plenty of local restaurants. Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area (right on post) offers hiking, fishing, and camping. The Bourbon Trail is in your backyard — Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, and a dozen other distilleries are all within an hour's drive.

For families, Fort Knox has a solid MWR program with youth sports, pools, bowling, a movie theater, and Lindsey Golf Course. The on-post community centers run regular events, and there's a strong network of family readiness groups for every unit.

Healthcare at Fort Knox

Ireland Army Community Hospital is the main medical facility on post, offering primary care, OB/GYN, pediatrics, pharmacy, and emergency services. For specialty care not available on post, you'll typically be referred to providers in Elizabethtown or Louisville through TRICARE. Hardin Memorial Health (now Baptist Health Hardin) in Elizabethtown is a major regional hospital and handles many military family referrals.
