Temporary Lodging Entitlements

Before exploring your options, understand what the Army will reimburse. There are two programs for temporary lodging:

TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense)

TLE is the CONUS (Continental United States) temporary lodging allowance. Key details:

TLA is technically for OCONUS (Outside Continental United States) moves, not CONUS PCS moves. Pet-friendly rooms (limited availability, advance request required)

The catch: on-post lodging books up fast during PCS season (May through August). If you know your report date, call and reserve as far in advance as possible. Priority goes to PCS travelers, but that doesn't guarantee availability during peak season.

Off-Post Temporary Housing Options

Extended-Stay Hotels

Radcliff area: Several budget and mid-range hotels line US-31W near Gold Vault Gate. Quality varies — read recent reviews before booking. Look for properties with kitchenettes and separate living areas if you have a family.
Elizabethtown: More hotel options with generally higher quality. The I-65 corridor and Ring Road area have Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, and similar chains. Extended-stay properties like Home2 Suites offer kitchen facilities and are better suited for families staying 1-2 weeks or longer.

Pro tip: Call hotels directly and ask about government or military rates. Many offer per diem-level pricing specifically for PCS travelers, especially during off-peak months. Also ask about weekly rates, which can be significantly cheaper than nightly rates for extended stays.

Furnished Rentals and Short-Term Leases

If your temporary period will extend beyond 2-3 weeks (which happens more often than people plan for), consider:

Furnished apartments: Some apartment complexes in Radcliff and Elizabethtown offer furnished units with month-to-month or short-term leases. Availability is limited, so call ahead.
Vacation rentals: Platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo sometimes have options in the area. For stays over 28 days, many hosts offer significant discounts. This can be a good option for families needing a full house with kitchen and laundry.
Subletting: Military community Facebook groups occasionally post short-term sublets or temporary room rentals. This is less formal but can work in a pinch.

Tips for the Temporary Housing Period

Your HHG (Household Goods) shipment will take days to weeks to arrive. Pack a "PCS survival kit" with:

Don't wait to book. Reserve temporary housing as soon as you have a report date. PCS season (summer) fills up fast.
Don't rush your permanent housing decision. The pressure to get out of a hotel room is real, but signing a lease or making an offer on the wrong home because you're uncomfortable is worse. A few extra days in temporary housing is a small price for making the right long-term decision.
Don't forget to file TLE. Some service members leave money on the table by not filing their TLE claim. Keep every receipt and file promptly after moving into permanent housing.
